Mike McCurry (referee)

Michael McCurry (born 4 June 1964) is a football referee from Scotland. He is also a Baptist minister[1]. He refereed the 2005 League Cup Final.

[edit] Controversy

McCurry has been subject to criticism for his handling of a match between Rangers F.C. and Dundee United on 10th May 2008. Dundee Utd intend to lodge a complaint to the Scottish Football Association over the events.

Dundee United manager Craig Levein was quoted after the match: "We had a blatant penalty and he bottled it. If it's not a level playing field and, if we don't get the decisions, blatant, important decisions then what is the point of turning up?"[2]

McCurry has also stirred up controversy as minister of Mosspark Baptist Church in Glasgow when it came to light in May 2008 that he had a long-standing sexual relationship with a 20-year old Sunday School teacher. He managed to survive that scandal by ditching his lover, even though he had indicated to her parents that he wanted to marry her. The congregation of the church decided to take no action because they like his preaching style, though the Baptist Union of Scotland sought to distance itself from the matter by claiming that he is not actually a Baptist minister at all and that his appointment in the Mosspark church was void as it had no formal approval by the denomination.[3]
