Miguel Ángel Alonso Oyarbide, known as Periko or Perico Alonso (born 1 February 1953 in Tolosa) is a former Spanish (Basque) footballer and a former football coach. He is the father of current footballers Xabi Alonso and Mikel Alonso.
[edit] Playing career
During his playing career he won 20 caps for the Spanish national team, scoring one goal. He started his playing career with San Sebastian CF, whom he played with between 1974–77. He then moved to Real Sociedad and between 1977–82 won two league championships in 1981 and 1982.
For the 1983 season he moved to FC Barcelona and immediately won with them the Copa del Rey. In 1985 the team won the league championship, to give Alonso a personal hattrick of titles. He finished his playing career in 1988 with CE Sabadell.
[edit] Managerial career
Alonso held coaching positions with Tolosa CF, San Sebastián CF and SD Beasain between 1989–95. In 1995 he became coach of Segunda División team SD Eibar. He stayed for three seasons, having a relatively successful reign. 1998 saw a move to Hercules CF, and in 2000 he became head coach of Real Sociedad.
It was to be a short and unhappy reign and Alonso resigned, and retired from management, after only ten games.
