Midville, Swainsboro and Red Bluff Railroad

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Midville, Swainsboro and Red Bluff Railroad was chartered around 1888. It began operations on a line between Midville, GA and Swainsboro, GA sometime before 1890. It apparently never reached Red Bluff, GA and was noted on some documents as the Midville and Swainsboro Railroad. It's unclear if the M&S name was ever a legal name as the railroad became the Atlantic and Gulf Short Line Railroad around 1905, eventually being sold to the Georgia and Florida Railroad in 1906.

The railroad spur was owned by Jesse Thompson and used to transport lumber from his land in Emanuel county to his huge mill in Augusta Ga known as Jesse Thompson & Co. There were passenger routes but those who took this train dubbed it the Miserable, Sorry and Rough railroad due to the bumpy ride.
