Midland Railway 480 Class

A double framed inside cylinder 0-6-0 steam locomotive. Designed by Matthew Kirtley for the Midland Railway of Britain. Hundreds of these locomotives were built between 1868 to 1874.
As rebuilt by Samuel Johnson they had 18 in by 24 in cylinders, and the later boilers had a total heating surface of 1113 sq. ft., a grate area of 17.5 sq. ft. and a working pressure of 140 psi. Weight in working order was 39 tons 6 cwt.
The last of the class to remain in service was No 778 built in 1869. She was withdrawn for scrapping after 82 years of service, in 1951.
