How can one open one of these files? I receive them as "TNEF" attachments from time to time, and the TIFF is not a standard TIFF. It contains unknown fields that don't ever belong in a TIFF. Sometimes they contain JPEGs for some reason, which I've been able to recover using the "recoverjpeg" program, but sometimes the contents seem to be unrecoverable.

I did find a way to do it: http://www.suppressingfire.org/~burner/evil-mods-tiff/
