Michael J. H. Walsh

Michael J.H. Walsh CB DSO (born 1927 in Harrogate) was a major-general in the British Army and the Chief Scout of the United Kingdom and Overseas Territories between 1982 and 1988.[1]

Walsh was educated at Clifton House School in Harrogate, and was a member of the local Scout Troop. He attained the King's Scout Award with the added distinction of Gold Cords, indicating it as the highest award available in Scouting at the time. He later attended Sedbergh School before joining the Army in 1945. He was commissioned into the King's Royal Rifle Corps (60th Rifles) in 1946.

He held a number of roles in the Army, serving in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, becoming Director of Army Training in 1978. He retired from the Army in 1981, by which time he held the rank of major-general. The following year he was named Chief Scout, a position he retained for six years.
