Mian

Mian (Urdu: میاں) are found among Hindus and Muslims .It is family name and a title of nobility used in India by Rajputs from northern India , and northern Pakistan.

Mian are predominantly from the ruling members and leaders of the Arain tribe. Other titles used by Arain tribe include Chaudhry, Sardar, Malik and Mehr. Arain from Lahore include the famous Mian Arain of Bhaati Gate, Mozang Chungi, Ichra, Sanda, Mughalpura, Baghbanpura, Singhpura, Dharampura, JalandharAmritsar and Qila Gujjar Singh at Lahore. The original Arians are said to be from Hijjaz (Today's Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Palestine). When a boat of Muslims was taken over by the Hindus, Muhammad bin Qasim sent a messenger who did not come back. So Muhammad bin Qasim sent an army to India. With him came warriors of Areha tribe. Due to this, India was inrule from the Muslims for hundreds of years. The Mians are from same Areha (later became known as Arain) settled in India and mixed with the locals.[2]
[edit] Hill Rajputs
It can be used to mean a variety of men in notable positions, including Sardar, or more informally for an owner, or a respectable and honorable man or husband. It is also a hereditary title for a group of Rajput clans from the Hill states of India including Himanchal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. [3] hence Mian could also be Hindu or Muslim from Rajput and Khatri origins. After the advent of Islam some of these clans were converted to Islam but have continued to use Mian as a surname. They belong to several different regions however mostly originate from India and originally belong to

[edit] Punjabi Shaikhs
It is also used by some Chinioti Punjabi Shaikhs from the Khatri clans and Kashmiris from Lohar and Kashmiri Pundit descent. For example Mian Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani Prime Minister is a Kashmiri.

[edit] Mian Family
The only Mian family known in Pakistan is the Mian family. It is a noble family of Arain which has enjoyed a prominent role in Punjabi and Pakistani politics since the days of the Mughal Empire. On record this family is the only one which officially received Royal title of Mian from Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for their prominent contributions in the the sub-Continent. This family is also popularly known as the Mian Family Baghbanpura in Pakistan.
This family played a prominent role during British Raj (1857-1947), organizing All India Muslim League in 1906, establishing All India Muslim league in Punjab (1906-7), Muslim League of Women and independence of Pakistan (1947).
Another identity of this particular family is Shalimar Gardens in Lahore. They originally owned the land near Baghbanpura on which the Shalimar Gardens were built. The land was handed to the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, and in return custodianship of the Gardens was granted to the family. The Mian family ceased to be custodians of the site in 1962, after opposing the imposition of martial law in Pakistan by General Ayub Khan.

- Sir Mian Muhammad Shafi (1869-1932) - Member of Viceroy's Executive Council.
- Justice Sir Mian Abdur Rasheed - First Chief Justice of Pakistan (1947).
