MetroCAF is an acronym for the Metropolitan-Area College Computer Animation Festival. The festival was founded and continues to be sponsored by the NYC ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter. NYC ACM SIGGRAPH is part of the world-wide network of ACM SIGGRAPH Professional and Student Chapters.
[edit] History
According to Scott Lang, ACM SIGGRAPH Director for Chapters, MetroCAF was initially proposed as an opportunity to give NYC metropolitan-area schools a platform to showcase the Computer animations of their students. The "first" MetroCAF was actually an invitational event designed to encourage schools to submit their work which would be judged by a select panel of jurists. This first event took place in April, 2003 and included work from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Parsons The New School for Design, Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts (SVA), and William Paterson University.
The first official MetroCAF festival was held at the New School University's Tishman Auditorium in the fall of 2003. Any doubt in the interest of such an event by the N.Y.C digital community, was put to rest as 500 people attended the inaugural event . MetroCAF has continued to grow as submissions from the various schools have reached well over 100 per year. The festival has also seen an expansion in the number of participating schools and the number of accepted submissions every year.
