Metanx is a prescription medication made by Pamlab that contains folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6. It is approved by the FDA for use in vitamin deficiencies or prevention of deficiencies, but is used off-label for homocystinemia and homocystinuria. Some health care providers believe that reducing blood levels of homocysteine will reduce risks of certain cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and stroke.
One possible advantage of using Metanx over other B-vitamin supplements is that it contains versions of folic acid and vitamin B12 that are active, meaning that they are ready to use by the body without the need for conversion.
Metanx contains the following active ingredients (per tablet):
- L-methylfolate (Metafolin®): 2.8 mg
- Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate: 25 mg
- Methylcobalamin: 2 mg
