The article indicates that Mercer Ellington was not formally trained. The IMDB biography indicates that he was "educated at Juilliard, New York University, and Columbia University." Similar information can be found in this obituary. I am not sure whether or not it is at all accurate to say that he was trained by his father, but he definitely was also formally trained.
