Merseyrail Electrics was the franchise holder of the Merseyrail service from 19th January 1997.[1] The company was owned by MTL, who were also awarded the Northern Spirit franchise. MTL became bankrupt in 1999, and the franchise was handed to Arriva Trains Merseyside.
