MARCUS ANTONIUS JANSEN
BORN 1968 - NEW YORK, NY
Jansen is known for his gritty urban “lifescapes” and is considered by art critics and historians the innovator of a Modern Expressionism.
He has been awarded Who's Who in American Art and included in the Famous 100 Contemporary Artists book and the Flavio Puviani-International Encyclopedia Dictionary of Modern & Contemporary Art, Italy. His work as been requested by Colleges such as the California College of Art San Francisco and his book can be found at the prestigious College of William & Mary and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History collection. Jansen is also a member of the Artists Rights Society in New York City.
The native of New York, had his first exhibition in 1974 at Park Avenue’s Lever House at age six, while taking part in his elementary school art competition Jansen who painted a lion was chosen for the first time to exhibit his work publically. Residing in Bronx New York his first years, Jansen was influenced by the emerging graffiti art movement in his neighborhood that was then just taking shape. He and his family later moved to Germany where he was facinated by the old German expressionists work from the early 1900’s, as well as a European culture that became a key influence in his work in his later years as an artist. In 1982 Jansen was introduced to notorious graffiti artist “Isaac WEST Rubenstein” in Manhattan, who became a friend and encouraged Jansen to paint. In Germany Talkshow host Daisy Dee interviewed and supported Jansen at various live art performances and TV interviews. Being a product of both worlds and combining his multi-cultural background in his work, Modern Urban-Expressionism emerged. Over 30 years have passed for this painter who converted his life from a Gulf War Soldier and Sergeant in the Armed Forces to transforming ordinary and often forgotten urban areas into lasting icons. Jansen has become a pioneer in a growing dimension of Urban-Contemporary artists on the internet and international contemporary art scene, that seem to be quickly changing the face of traditional and non traditional art and media. The Paris Magazine Zurban, named Jansen alongside Robert Rauschenberg and Jean Michel Basquiat in 2006. They state: “He shares his experiences and observations with his audience through objects and human traces that are found in urban areas however opts the figurative”.
"What used to be the fields for Van Gogh, is for my generation the urban environment" says Jansen. The recently awarded “New Artist of the Year” 2005 by the Alliance for the Arts, has been juxtaposing sophisticated, complex and culturally as well as socially inspiring works since his military discharge. In 2004 Jansen exhibited at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery in Florida and met Robert Rauschenberg during a group show where both artists were on display in support of a Womens abuse shelter. Jansen has traveled extensively to places such as Italy, Spain, France, UK, SW and SE Asia and lived in different parts of Europe since a young age including over 10 years in Germany where he sudied at the Berufsfachschule fuer Gestaltung (Design) and the Berufschule fuer Maler (Painters) in a city called Moenchengladbach.
He was commissioned by Ford Motor Company as their Centennial artist in 2003 to capture the contribution of in particular minority workers at Ford for their aniversary. Jansen has exhibits in respected Galleries, Museums such as recently the Tampa Museum of Art as a winner of the under/CURRENT/over/VIEW 8 Biennial. In 2005, renowned art connoisseur and ex TV Director as well as Curator of the 1968, "des illuminations de Noël" at de l'avenue des Champs-Elysées and Gallery ownerJean Marc Alphan helped establish the first soley committed Jansen Gallery in Paris, the American Art Gallery.
His works are in permanent collections at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington D.C., Southwest Florida Museum of History, Fort Myers/Florida and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art in Taiwan where Jansens work bacame one out of only 8 American works to be selected for the International Print & Drawing Biennial Taiwan. He is also represented by Lawrence Asher Gallery, Los Angeles and Gallery on Fifth, Naples Florida.
Since officially introducing his work in 1997, Jansen has appeared in various media around the world including: LCI, French TV News Channel, Paris/France, WINK TV, Fort Myers/Florida, NY Arts Magazine, Skin Magazine, UAE, Naples Daily News, News-Press, Tampa Tribune, Lodown Magazine, Berlin Germany, Art Business News, Art World News, Lifescapes, Los Angeles, Artillery Magazine, Los Angeles, Expressions Magazine WGCU and many more.
Jansens book “Modern Urban Expressionism, The Art of Marcus Antonius Jansen”, has recently been released in December 2006. It includes words by Bruce George, Co-Founder of Def Poetry Jam New York, the “Father” of Digital art Laurence Gartel, and instructor to Andy Warhol on computers. The foreword is written by noted museum curator and director as well as former executive director of the Office of Cultural Affairs of New York City Jerome Allan Donson who directed shows of many of Americas greatest action painters that include: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Jasper John and Robert Rauschenberg to name a few.
