Talk:Meninges

I feel this page could really do with a diagram of some sort...

If the arachnoid and pia mater are called the leptomeninges, is there a comparable word used to describe the dura mater? Thanks!

I believe pachymeninges (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Pachymeninx); however, pach·y·men·in·gi·tis (pk-mnn-jts), is also called perimeningitis (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pachymeningitis).

From stedmans: meninx, gen. meningis [TA]

, pl. meninges () Any membrane; specifically, one of the membranous coverings of the brain and spinal cord. SEE ALSO: arachnoid mater, dura mater, pia mater, leptomeninx. [Mod. L. fr. G. meninx, membrane] meninx fibrosa. rarely used term for dura mater. meninx primitiva. SYN: primordial meninx. primordial meninx. the loose embryonic mesenchymal tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord from which their membranous coverings (dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater) are derived. SYN: meninx primitiva. meninx tenuis. SYN: leptomeninx. vascular meninx. rarely used term for pia mater. SYN: meninx vasculosa. meninx vasculosa. SYN: vascular meninx.
