The Bird

One morning
I walked outside
The dew was on the grass
The morning crisp
The air was cool
A bird came
Red as a hot fire
Flitted in and out
Of the branches
Like an embroidery needle
Stitching
Stitching
Landed
On the branch
Of the tree
It perched
And sat
Still
A statue
In the tree
Still
Suddenly it twitched
It was off
Far away
A signal fire on the horizon
Shrinking like a fire
Untended to
Farther
Smaller
Until it left
And the tree
Silently
With me
Silently together
Silent
A crisp silent morning
