  • being a melbournian, i have experienced this, weell practiced phenomenon, it's really quite amazing, the description doesn't really do it justice, only one thing to do, come down to melbourne :)

I think the photos are in the article are now very outdated, as the stadium is now completely different as a result of the building of the ponsford and olympic stands (effectively half to 3/4's of the whole stadium). The ponsford stand was in fact demolished a number of years ago. maybe new photos could be added to the article that reflect the changes.

23/12/2005-Changed capacity from 105,000 to the correct figure of 100,000. 165.228.63.197 19:40, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Not only was the first Test match played at the MCG, the first One-Day International match was also played there, on January 5, 1971, between Australia and England. Australia won the 40-over match by 5 wickets. The next ODI was played on August 1972, some 19 months later.[6] Is this bit correct? I suspect the first ODI was at Arctic Park.

[edit] New Main Picture needed

If anyone has or can obtain a current picture of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (With the new Great Northern Stand) that would be great. The current picture does not represent anymore what the ground looks like and creates a different image to the reader of what the MCG currently looks like. A picture similar to this would be appropiate: Click for picture This one can't be used because it is copyright Getty Images and I don't know how you can get this picture for use on Wikipedia. [edit] Placement of cricket above football

Should the cricket heading be shifted above football? I think it should for the following reasons:

  • The ground was originally used for cricket and was only later used for football.
  • International readers are more likely to be aware of it for its cricket heritage rather than its use as a football ground. It is best known internationally as a cricket ground.

You have a point. However, the main reason why it has developed into the world class stadium that it is is because of the football.

It is called the Melbourne CRICKET Ground. Cricket comes first.--Jeff79 23:42, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Jeff for the reasons given above, especially the point that non-Australian readers associate the ground with cricket, not football. Edelmand 14:23, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Heritage listing announcement

During the lunch break at the 2005 Boxing Day Cricket Test, it was announced by Australian Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello, that the MCG would be added to the Australian Heritage Register.

I've spent most of the night finding and uploading a few images of the MCG. Most of these images are relatively recent, having been taken in mid to late 2006 and are quite attractive, IMHO. Here's one at night:

Here's one of the stands. I'm a South African and never been to the MCG, so I'm not sure if this is the "Great Northern Stand" referred to earlier, but it seems pretty great :)

In the third paragraph in the opening section it says "Until the 1970s, more than 120,000 people were sometimes crammed into the venue...." Lower in the article, the list of attendances shows that only three times did the crowd reach 120,000 or over. I think to say '120,000 people were sometimes crammed into the venue', though technically true, is misleading if it happened only three times. I think the whole line could be removed. On noticing a couple of months ago that bay 13 did not have its own article I created one. It is currently not a great article however i do believe that Bay 13 deserves its own article; please help to improve it. I noticed that the construction cost for the redevelopment is listed as $144,444.4 Million.

  • Price:
    • In the 'Stadium Development' section the cost for the 2006 redevelopment is given as "more than 400 Million AUD"
    • 144 Billion does seem a bit much
  • Currency: Are the values given in that box USD or AUD?


I don't know the proper figures, so I cannot correct this myself.

I noticed this too, I'm thinking it might be some cleverly hidden vandalism which escaped unnoticed. I'm going though the history - this randomly selected revision [1] states the following: $6,000 (Original Stand) $144.4 Million (2006 Refurb). $6000 for the original stand doesn't really say much either - which "original" stand? Dollars weren't in use until 1966 in Australia, so it makes even less sense. It's probably best to just state whatever the correct cost of the 2006 redevelopment was, and the cost of the Great Southern Stand since those are the only two stands which still remain. invincible 09:23, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] North Melbourne and Night Football at the MCG

I was wondering if anyone could specify: the MCG article states that North Melbourne played the first night football match at the MCG in 110 years - I'm sure this is a typo, but I don't want to change it in case I get it wrong, and when it doesn't LOOK like a typo, it's more likely to be taken as "gospel".
