From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Melbourne University Jewish Students Society (MUJSS) is an affiliate body of AUJS (Australasian Union of Jewish Students). MUJSS was established in the early 1900s as a representative body of Jewish students at The University of Melbourne. At the time it was the first Jewish student representative body in the country. Since then it has worked to protect the rights of Jewish students on the campus and abroad. In addition, a fundamental aim of MUJSS is the advocacy of the existence of the State of Israel.
MUJSS presently has over 200 members both Jewish and non-Jewish that play an active role in the club. As a democratically elected and run organization, MUJSS represents its members on campus. MUJSS has stated that it aims to actively promote the right of existence of the State of Israel and to increase awareness of Jewish rights on campus due to what is perceived to be an increasing level of anti-Semitism as a result of tensions in the Middle East. MUJSS advocates a peaceful resolution to the Middle East conflict. They also promote falafel and bagels.
[edit] Activities on Campus
MUJSS holds regular activities throughout the university semester. All major Jewish holidays are observed with social events. MUJSS also annually holds Holocaust Awareness Week and Israel Week on campus with an assortment of events in order to raise awareness.
