Melanie Pappenheim

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Melanie Pappenheim is a female vocalist, most notable for her vocal work on Doctor Who. She has garnered critical acclaim for her work on Doctor Who due to the ethereal vocals used in the Doctor's leitmotif - to which the producers described her as "President Flavia (from The Five Doctors) singing out of the time vortex". As a result, many of the show's fans refer to her as "Flavia". Her vocals on the track "Doomsday" (used in the denouement of the eponymous episode) caused an influx of emails to the BBC about her contribution to the soundtrack. Her vocal contributions can also be heard on the third series of Doctor Who. Murray has since said that he doesn't know if Melanie will return for the fourth series soundtrack as "she isn't very Donna", referring to the more dominant personality of the new Doctor Who companion played by Catherine Tate. However, she did contribute her familar vocals to the recent Christmas special of Doctor Who.

She frequently works with composers Simon Fisher Turner, Orlando Gough and Jocelyn Pook and is also a member of their respective musical projects. With Gough, Melanie has been a member of his 16 piece choir The Shout since 1998 and with Pook, she has been one of the three vocalists of her 10 piece ensemble who have contributed to the soundtracks of Eyes Wide Shut and Gangs of New York. With Simon, she has contributed to the soundtracks of two Derek Jarman films. Simon has compared Melanie's work ethic to that of Jarman's, in that there is a great understanding between them without much communicating.
