[edit] Ringmail
I don't know if he regards himself as an expert, I've sweated enough to know for sure that a broigne is not a victorian mistake, and to find citable sources for it. I understand that the English language world lacks proper history on the subject, but from a continental point of view, there's no mistake possible that ringmail is different from chainmail and was used in the period between the fall of Rome and the comeback of chainmail in the late 1100s. Also, the high handed way in which he remade all the article with no regard for the efforts of those who came before him, and without even setting up an account for people to discuss the matter with him was, to my view, qualification for vandalism.
I'm quite willing to include the bit about representations making it difficult to differenciate between chainmail and ringmail, and the possibility of misconceptions in the 1800s, but the basic matter as established with my collaboration stands, even if it has to be edited further. --Svartalf 11:50, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
Huh, it's weird how the literature in different languages can disagree so much, eh? French Wikipedia says that a broigne is a leather shirt with iron rings, whereas many English sources equate broigne with byrnie, a mailshirt. Anyway, this is not my field, I just wanted to get a discussion going. I've left a link on your talk page, if you are willing. Megalophias 15:56, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
confusing broigne and byrnie is normal, given the fact that both words are almost certainly cognate. I'll check your message and get on with the talk.
- I got disgusted with the fact that mr howard seems more in winning the argument, by using debate team histrionics and courtroom antics, rather than with having a serious argument. I must admit that, not knowing how much of an expert he really is, his gratuitous downplaying of authors who are generally regarded as authoritative made me want to puke on him. If I get more reason to respect him, and less to respect Mr Contamine, things may change.
[edit] crossbow
could you help a bit on the crossbow article. some Chinese nationalist is getting very nasty, deleting lots of stuff, just to emphasize it was INVENTED IN CHINA. He is not interested in more points about the crossbow (even that it was used in China... and how it was made). I think some real discussion is needed, because I don`t think its a good idea to rewrite wiki every week.
Thank you Wandalstouring
PS: you are perfectly right about armour. ringmail is usually worn over a vest of linen and was more casual dress than armour.
[edit] ARMA
This is a head's up that some anonymous user is trying to make changes to the criticism section of the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts article, using Amazon reviews as sources, and generally reverting many of the improvements that were made to the article recently. This user has not discussed any of these changes on the talk page. The Jade Knight 18:37, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
