The meggie is a hand gesture that is made by bringing the tips of all fingers (including the thumb) together. It is commonly used to ridicule or prank, all those who are observed by the giver to have acknowledge it. If the giver is not aware that a person has seen the meggie, that person is not a victim. The requirements for execution and receiving of a meggie can be summarized as follows.

  • The giver must be consciously and proactively aware that he/she is going to give or is giving a meggie.
  • Both the giver and receiver must acknowledge that receiver has received the meggie.
  • If either of the involved parties fails to acknowledge the execution or receiving of the meggie, the meggie is void.
  • A simple denial of acknowledgment by the receiver is not sufficient grounds to void a meggie.

The receiver of a meggie or a giver's target does not have to be, and is not limited to a single individual. A meggie can be given to and subsequently received by any number of individuals once the following outlines holds true for each receiving party. If an unintended individual receives a meggie, he/she can become a valid victim once the second condition outlined in the summery of requirements holds true.

[edit] Response

A meggie can trigger a mild to extreme emotional response in receivers. A meggie between friends is normally received with a comedic response which may involve the exchange of homophobic remarks. The normal response to the receiving of a meggie from a rival, foe or stranger however can trigger emotions of denial which normally accompanies the sense of confusion and/or anger. In some cases, the response to a meggie can become physical in which case the meggie is reciprocated by a slap or cough.

The meggie always gives a sense of satisfaction and/or raised self esteem in the giver.

[edit] Evolution of Execution

The original meggie was performed in a manner so that it may be easily seen by the intended receiver, that is, in line of sight. As the individual or population involved in meggie giving matures, more sophisticated means of dealing a meggie is often sought. These more sophisticated means of execution may involve but are not limited to, "pull my finger” type executions, "rabbit out of the hat” type executions as well as re-directed sight type executions. More recently, electronic means of giving a meggie have been executed. One documented case involved the tagging of intended receivers in a Facebook picture of a meggie.

The form of the meggie has also evolved over time. “Meggie-by-satellite” and “Super-meggie”, are some cliché advanced forms of the meggie. The evolution of the meggie also came in the form of hybrids, with the “meggie-with-erection” or “meggie-giving-finger” being among the most well know.

[edit] History

Due to the nature of the ritualized meggie, there has been no serious academic research or publishing on the phenomenon as of date. Due to the demographics of individuals who practice the meggie however, it can be deduced that the meggie evolved in Trinidadian schoolyards sometime during the 1970's. By the 1980's, the meggie was universally recognized by adolescents and late teens.
