• Discussions during formal mediation are privileged; they cannot be used against the parties in later proceedings (e.g. RfArb/RfC). Why is that important?

Profile:

Wayne is an experienced mediator. Membership to the wikipedia mediation committee will enhance the function of the committee and provide dispute resolution services to people submitting information to the web site.

Roles undertaken by Wayne have mainly focused on “community development” initiatives. Much of this work involves capacity building with sought after leadership qualities coming to the fore. His formative experiences in governance have been as school trustee and member of the Timaru Area Committee of the Order of St John. Mr Marriott is a hard worker in his community and well known for his efforts in cancer control both as a clinician and public health worker. He has extensive experience in treatment and policy formation in the area of cancer control and other terminal diseases.

Wayne Marriott trained and worked as a Radiation Therapist through the late eighties. He also holds qualifications as an ambulance officer, and worked with emergency services in Christchurch, Dunedin and Timaru since 1987. Mr Marriott has served as a member on the Hospital Advisory Committee with the South Canterbury District Health Board since its inception in 2001.

He worked as a health promotion officer with the local public health service before managing the local Cancer Society support service. In both these positions he worked to educate people how to avoid cancer and also minimise the effects of the disease on those who suffer from it. Wayne was instrumental in the formation of many support groups in South Canterbury, many of which continue. Wayne made a significant contribution to the development and implementation of training programmes for volunteers.

Following a year with the Arowhenua Marae health service involving service development and capacity building, Mr Marriott began mediating for Tenancy Services and assists landlords and tenants resolve conflict. This part time role is supplemented by another part time position with the South Canterbury office of Community and Public Health (Canterbury District Health Board) as a health promoter specialising in smokefree and liquor licensing compliance.

Wayne now works as team leader of 11 mediators located in the southern region for the Department of Building and Housing.

Wayne has a deep passion for the welfare and wellbeing of his country. His proven skills and experience in community development / community action and his ability to relate to people from a variety of social spectra is enhanced by the application of good management practices, and interpersonal skills. With empowerment and equity as key virtues, the framework for community development and social marketing provide an invaluable guide to his work ethic. His strength in consultation process has lead to facilitation roles in a range of social settings.

Mr Marriott’s family has been a cornerstone to his leadership qualities as he has endeavoured to assist the community, serving on a variety of school boards, not-for-profit organisations and community groups and working within a political environment, notably during the 1999 and 2002 general elections. His special interest in disability issues was borne from his personal experience with his two children with disabilities.

• Neutral. You appear to have an impressive resume, and some solid Mediation experience in RL. However, that is unverified, and the only basis we have on which to judge your Mediation ability is through on-Wikipedia practical experience (e.g., with the MedCab). Unfortunately, I cannot see any such experience. If you can provide it, that's great, and I'll gladly reconsider my position on your nomination. Otherwise, I'm afraid I'm opposed to your appointment when I know nothing of your ability to resolve disputes on Wikipedia. However, the battleground that is wikipedia is vastly different to that which any of us may encounter day to day, and for that reason I feel that I must oppose your nomination to join the committee, until you have gained a greater, demonstrable understanding of Wikipedia policies and customs.
