McGuckin is an Anglicized version of the Irish surname Mag Eocháin ("son of Eocha"). This surname is most common in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland. The family motto is "semper patriae servire presio", which translates as "always ready to serve by country". "Son of eocha" probably refers to one of the famous leaders of the first millennium named Eochaid, possibally a king of Dál Riata or an Ard Rí of Ireland.
