The surname McAleer originates from County Tyrone, Ulster on the island of Ireland. Its Gaelic translation is Mac Giolla Uidir. It is thought to mean "Son of the servant of Saint Odhar. Legend says that Saint Odhar was Saint Patrick's charioteer.
