[edit] Background
After graduating from k.u.k. Naval Academy in Fiume he started his maritime career in Pola in 1877.
He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1911, and to Vice-admiral in 1913.
[edit] Kriegsmarine Commander-in-Chief
He was named Commander in Chief of the K.u.K. Kriegsmarine and the fleet after the death of Grand Admiral Anton Haus in February of 1917.
Later that year, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany and Kaiser Karl I of Austria considered an invasion of Venice with the whole fleet, but Njegovan decidedly objected to this idea. Some months later, after the Gulf of Kotor Mutiny, he was replaced by Rear Admiral Miklós Horthy and retired in Pola.
[edit] Death
He died in 1930 several years after the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and is buried in Mirogoj cemetery.
