[edit] Early career

Shortly after graduating from UCLA in 1917, Long moved to the island of Hawai'i to teach in elementary schools. When he arrived, he was surprised to find that the Hawaiian kahunas still practiced what he called magic. He wrote that at first he was skeptical of this magic, but later became convinced that it worked. He devoted the rest of his life to constructing theories about how the kahuna did what they did and teaching those theories through books and lectures.

[edit] Invention of Huna

Long called his teachings Huna. He researched and published articles on Fire-walking, though never firewalked himself. He founded the Huna Fellowship in 1945 and, starting in 1948, published a series of books on Huna that are still in print. The inner circle of Huna was called the Huna Research Associates[1]. The Huna Church was registered as The Huna Fellowship[2] first in California, now in Missouri.

Long's books on Huna attracted many philosophers of the religious or supernatural to assist him in the development of the Huna theology. Long has many disciples, who publish, offer seminars, spiritual counseling, healing, and massage; some teach their own version of Huna. Others teach Huna who do not claim any affiliation to Long.

[edit] Origin of the name Huna

According to the Pukui and Ebert Hawaiian Dictionary, Huna means "minute particle, grain, crumb, gram, speck, tiny bit, scrap, minutia; small, little, powdery." The second definition is "hidden secret." None of the accepted Hawaiian sources - Malo, Kamakau, 'I'i, Kepelino - use the word Huna for a tradition of esoteric learning. Long wrote that he used it because it is part of the word kahuna, which means "priest, sorcerer, magician, wizard, minister, expert in any profession."
