The MAX Green Line is a planned light rail route in the MAX Light Rail system in Portland, Oregon, USA. The line is the first section of a two-phase transportation plan known as the South Corridor Project. It is also known as the I-205 MAX because the majority of the line will run along Interstate 205 through Southeast Portland. Combined with the Portland Transit Mall Revitalization Project, the Green Line will run between Portland State University and Clackamas Town Center. The route, as of September 2007, is under construction. The opening is set for September of 2009.
The line will be served by 21 Siemens Transportation Systems trains. They will offer 12 more seats, and larger windows, than existing MAX trains.
The budget for the project is $575.7M, of which federal funds cover 60% ($334.4M) with a local match of 40% ($222.9M.)
The Green Line will consist of two projects constructed simultaneously:
- Portland Mall Revitalization Project: Will add light rail tracks onto the Portland Transit Mall on both Fifth and Sixth Avenues between Portland State and Union Station. The project was born of the need to relieve congestion on the existing downtown Portland MAX alignment on Yamhill and Morrison Streets. This project was originally conceived as part of a north-south light rail project between Vancouver, Washington and Clackamas. Upon opening, the Yellow Line's downtown route will use this segment, and the Orange Line will use it when it is constructed.
- I-205 Light Rail Project: Will add a new 6.5 mile (10.5 km) alignment between Gateway Transit Center and a new Clackamas Town Center Transit Center. The majority of this route will use the grade-separated, unfinished I-205 Transitway built with I-205.
