Taken August 30,2005. This tablet is installed on the outer camp wall, to the right of the camp gates. I am not sure who put the tablet up.

"The concentration camp of Mauthausen was located at this site from June 1938 to 5 May 1945. Here and in its sub-camps, 122,766 prisoners were horrendously murdered by Nazi executioners.(*) They include:

  • Soviet soldiers and officers

and civilians from the USSR: 32,180

  • Polish citizens: 30,203
  • Hungarian citizens: 12,923
  • Yugoslav citizens: 12,870
  • French citizens: 8,203
  • Spanish citizens: 6,502
  • Italian citizens: 5,750
  • Czechoslovak citizens: 4,473
  • Greek citizens: 3,700
  • German anti-Fascists: 1,500
  • Belgian citizens: 742
  • Austrian anti-Fascists: 235
  • Dutch citizens: 1,078
  • Norwegian citizens: 77
  • American citizens: 34
  • Luxembourgish citizens: 19
  • English citizens: 17
  • Citizens of other nations and stateless people: 3,160

The camp was transferred by the Soviet Army to the Federal Government of Austria on 20 June 1947."

(*) Note: this German term for "executioner" is more derogatory than the English term.
