I think that Gehrig quote might have been for real, as it sounds familiar. It might also be someone else who said it, not Gehrig... and lacking a citation, one cannot be sure. Wahkeenah 03:05, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

I guess you're referring to Babe Ruth's Called Shot. After doing an google search you seem to be right. I added it back with a citation. I suppose I jumped the gun - it was an anonymous user and what seemed to be a derogatory statement so I reverted it instinctively. - Mattingly23 03:33, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes. My first instinct also was to delete it, as it didn't really seem like something Gehrig would say, but that's a stereotype... everyone seemed soft-spoken compared to Ruth. And political correctness was not exactly prevalent in those days. For all we know, Gehrig could have said something else, that was sanitized for the papers... like this alleged quote of Ruth's, explaining his secret to hitting: "When I see the ball, I swing my head off!" Just wanted to thank you for nominating the article for GA. I mostly did legwork on the article (finding resources for others to cite), but mentally that article's as close as I get to violating WP:OWN, since Jake is (was? - I hate figuring out how to refer to the deceased) my great-great-uncle. We'll have to wait and see if there are any notes, and I am certainly willing to help resolve any issues that come up during the approval process. The Dark 18:40, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
