[edit] Written Maldivian numbers

Writing Maldivian numbers is not easy. Numbers, when written isolated, are written in the vocative. So for example 'ekeh' is "one", but if you want to say for example "one pound", you would say "eh pound". The final "h" is an "alifu sukun" or glottal stop, which would double the following consonant's sound. So it would sound as "eppound". Endings change according to the consonant attached to the sound. Five pounds would become "faspound", but eight would become "appound", because the dissappearing "shaviyani" sound (shaviyani sukun) would become a glottal stop.

My point is that writing Maldivian numbers in their vocative isolated form is not very useful, because they are seldom used in that form in normal conversation. Mohonu 16:47, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
