Drinking Cricket is a team sport to be enjoyed in the park on a sunny summer afternoon. Essentially a simplified version of cricket where runs are replaced by drinks. The team with the most empty cans/bottles at the end of the innings wins!

The true origins of the game are unknown and all claims that the sport was conceived in Australia are viciously exaggerated. The first known reference to Drinking Cricket in the UK was when a game was observed on Wandsworth Bridge Common in the summer of 2007, which may or may not have been organised by a group of Australians involved in an Antipodean birthday celebration. What is known is that Drinking Cricket is officially the best game in the world ( see Facts).

Equipment for drinking cricket differs to that for standard cricket somewhat and very closely resembles a childs cricket set. A drinking cricket ball is identical to a tennis ball in every way. No pads are required. Play is similar to that of Quick Cricket and is continuous - the bowler will bowl as soon as he/she has the ball - whether the batsman is ready or not. The batsman hits the ball in the normal manner but does not score runs. Instead the batsman rushes to a nearby table (traditionally placed 5 yards to the batsmans right) where a drink awaits. The batsman procedes to "down" as much of the drink as possible in the time it takes for the fielding team to retrieve the ball and the bowler to bowl again. Score is kept by lining up the empty cans/bottles consumed. If the bowler bowls before the batsman returns to his crease and subsequently hits the stumps, the batsman is out. An innings lasts until all of a teams players are out and then the total score is added together. The team with the highest total wins!

There are no is no lbw rule in drinking cricket and there are only three ways to be out:

  • Bowled
  • Caught
  • Vomitting

Additional rules:

  • Al fielders (including the bowler) must have a drink in their hand at all times
  • Each team must contain at least one female
  • There are no boundaries
