[edit] Merger

agree that Matres and Deae Matres should be merged; the DEAE prefix simply being the dative plural of the word goddess. --Nantonos 11:49, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Move from Matres to Matronae?

What about a move to Matronae? I've been doing some poking around through Jufer and Luginbühl's Repertoire des dieux gaulois lately, and they document many more inscriptions to the Matronae than to the Matres... QuartierLatin1968 El bien mas preciado es la libertad 16:56, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Support: If the sources back it, it works for me. PS: Please do not put images in your signature; this is strongly discouraged. As opposed to CSS futzing like my sig, which is only slightly discouraged. Heh. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 08:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
Re signature: As you can see, I have both complied and modernized during the interim. ;-) Q·L·1968 10:18, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nutrices Augustae and change to Matronae

Nutrices Augustae means "August Nurses", not "Nurses of Augustus". My knowledge of Latin goes that far... "Nurses of Augustus" would be something like Nutrices Augusti.

About a change to Matronae: I got here through Matres, while looking into the corresponding divinities of the Iberian Peninsula, where, as far as I know, the name Matronae is rarely if ever used. It never would have occurred to me to check for Matronae, a name that probably implies main-stream, romanized celticity. And Matres, after all, simply means "Mothers": what's more simple than that? ... but what do I know?

You are completely right concerning the Latin – I'll change it in a moment. As for the move, it's true, there are more Matronae in some regions and more Matres in others; in either case, we'd leave a redirect from the other name... Q·L·1968 10:18, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
