Mattila Square

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mattila Square in Houghton, Michigan, USA, though called a "square," is really nothing more than a parking lot, with the exception of the former Mineral Range Railroad (later Soo Railroad) Depot building[1] that is now the headquarters of Yalmer Mattila Contracting, after which it is presumably named. It is "the block of land between Isle Royale and Huron Streets, Lakeshore Drive and Portage Lake"[2] "west of the UPPCO [Upper Peninsula Power Company, that provides electricity to the city] building."[3] (Arguably the Square includes Brew Alley.) The Waterfront Trail runs through it.

"The City of Houghton has proposed some reorganization of the parking to create space for walkways to the lakefront and for a segment of the waterfront trail that crosses the parking area. New theme lighting is also proposed for this area."[4]

It is the site of the annual Spring Art and Music Festival;[5][6] associated road races have ended in the square.[7]
