[edit] Playing career
He was drafted by Buffalo 83rd overall in the fourth round in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.
Barnaby was generally considered a pest. Therefore, he racked up penalty minutes (his personal record was 335 with the 1995–96 Sabres), and was frequently involved in on-ice altercations. One of his most celebrated fights was with Rob Ray in the 1999 season; the two are off-ice friends and had had dinner together the night before. Barnaby is known for his affable character off-ice and is one of the league's most willing interviewees. He attended Philemon Wright High School in Hull, Quebec.
He infamously referred to then-New Jersey Devils defenceman Lyle Odelein as "Cornelius," a reference to the Roddy McDowall character in Planet of the Apes.
In the off season Barnaby lives in Buffalo, NY where he and former Sabres teammate Rob Ray own a construction company. They also co-host The Enforcers on Time Warner Sports 26.
In July 2007, Barnaby announced his retirement from the NHL due to a concussion he suffered in January, 2007. He stated he wanted to be around his son and daughter while they participate in hockey and gymnastics.
In September of 2007, it was announced via the Sabres website that Barnaby would be given a tryout for replacing Jim Lorentz as color commentator for the Sabres. He served in that capacity for the September 26th pre-season game. The permanent position, however, went to Harry Neale instead.
He is an occasional broadcaster and commentator for the show NHL on TSN. Most recently he appeared on the commentary panel during the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
