Matt Craig

Matthew James Craig (born April 16, 1981 in Dallas, Texas) is a Minor League first baseman for the Iowa Cubs, the AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. He was drafted by the Cubs in 2002 in the third round after playing two years for the University of Richmond[1].

A six-foot three-inch two hundred pound corner infielder, Craig attended Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, Texas[2]. Craig is a switch-hitter, and throws right handed.

Craig played for three seasons at Richmond, batting .375 with 19 home runs and 84 RBIs in just 66 games in 2002[2]. After being drafted by the Cubs, he was assigned to the Boise Hawks one of the Cubs single A affiliates. Craig moved up the Cubs minor league system, playing for the Daytona Cubs and the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx during the 2003-07 seasons, and was promoted to the Iowa Cubs on July 25, 2007[3]. Matt Craig was named PCL Batter of the Week for the week of August 6-12, for a week which included an average of .522, nine RBIs, 2 home runs and a slugging percentage of .957[4]. Craig is currently with the Tennessee Smokies for the 2008 season [5] including time spent on the DL list [6]. Craig spent most of Minor League camp with the Iowa AAA franchise, but received a call from the Cub's vice president for player personnel, Oneri Fleita, at the end of camp informing him that he was going back to the Smokies [7].
