Matt Cates (born Matthew Robert Cates, 1951), is an American Voice Actor.
Cates began his career in radio in the 1970s, in his hometown of Saint Joseph, Missouri, at a station up for sale at the time of his hiring. As a result of staff attrition, and despite his lack of formal broadcast training, he eventually took on the roles of Disk Jockey, Production Director, Talk Show host, and News Director. He moved on to another local outlet, KKJO, where he hosted the station's morning talk program and polished his writing and production skills -- often voicing all the roles in a single project via multi-tracking and overdubbing.
In 1982, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he continued his work in radio production, often hosting mid-day and afternoon-drive programs, well into the 1990s. His last regular broadcast position was as News Director of KKIS, Concord, California.
While at KKIS, he began doing independent voice-over work, and has since utilized his many character voices in nationally-aired radio & television commercials, as well as multimedia software. He voiced the role of the Robot Pilot on Deep Earth Exploration, a motion simulator dark ride at MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park in Las Vegas.
Cates is Chairman of the Screen Actors Guild Conservatory (San Francisco Branch), and is a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
