[edit] Daily Classes
The school consists of grades 1 through 12, made of over 1,000 students. Grades are then spread out into sections, ranging from A to D (e.g. 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 2A... etc.). It is divided into lower class (ranging from grades 1-5) and upper class (ranging from grades 6-12). The school also has several computer labs for lower and upper class, and art and music facilities. The classrooms consist of no more than 20 students. The classes from grades 6 to 12 are then rotated between 45 minute a day periods between English, math, science, reading, and social studies.
Apart from regular classes, the school also has academies, classes set up to build skills for the future. These classes are Medical Science, Accounting, Computer Science, and Law Academy.
[edit] Extra Curricular Activities
After regular classes, the students may also partake in afterschool activities or tutoring by the teachers, usually from 3-4pm. Several of these activities are cheerleading, exercise, sewing, public speaking, debating, and many more. These activities do nothing for the students' GPA who choose to attend.
[edit] School Athletics Program
MCSCS has no gym or other athletic facility, so most practice and games take place at a local gymnasium, not owned by the school. The school basketball team is known as the Elephants, named after the school mascot, an African Elephant. The school currently has no other athletic programs.
[edit] School Uniform Policy
The school requires students to wear uniforms consisting of navy blue pants for males and skirts for females, navy blue ties, and white shirts. Other accessories are allowed, but strictly monitored. Students may also wear navy blue sweaters, earrings and watches. Students who disrupt this policy are punished.
[edit] Achievements
The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School was named one of the top 10 schools in Philadelphia, including public and charter schools. Also, every Thursday, the school participates in its self-created Homeless Project, in which the CAO and several students go out and feed and clothe homeless citizens of Philadelphia. The school also has made Adequate Yearly Progress, and has also received several positive testimonials from visitors. One of which includes:
"I left my visit from MCSCS with a feeling of what a refreshing educational program experience. I am enthused that expert educators and administrators are offering this experience to our children."
-Floyd Alston, President and CEO of Beech Interplex, Inc., and first president of the Philadelphia School Board[1]
