Matapeake, Maryland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matapeake is an unincorporated community located south of Stevensville on Kent Island, Maryland. It is named for the Matapeake indian tribe who lived there prior to colonization by English in 1631.[1]

Before construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Matapeake was the eastern terminus of a cross-bay ferry.[2] The ferry building still exists, at the Matapeake Maritime Center.[3]

Today, Matapeake is home to Matapeake State Park, Christ Episcopal Church of Kent Island, Matapeake Elementary School, and Matapeake Middle School.
