MasterMinds (Quiz Bowl) is a division of the national Quiz Bowl organization, closely related to College Bowl. There are multiple sets of leagues for the different areas of New York State: the Albany Leagues, Buffalo Leagues, Rochester Leagues, and the recent additions of the Syracuse League. Masterminds is sometimes referred to as "Mindblasters," a practice started by the Syracuse League team Manlius Pebble Hill.

[edit] Rules

[edit] General

MasterMinds uses a variation of the traditional Quiz Bowl rules, similar to College Bowl rules. Each team is allowed to have four members playing at once, but three of these can switch between the two seven-minute halves (the captain has to remain in play).

[edit] Toss-Up Questions

Toss-Up questions are worth 10 points apiece. They are asked, and any one person from either team can buzz in and give the answer. If they get the question correct, their team receives 10 points and the opportunity to answer a bonus question. However, no confering can occur.

[edit] Bonus Questions

These questions are aimed for the team to work together to answer. Ranging from 20 to 30 points each, these can really help a team earn points very quickly. They are usually composed of multiple parts, each worth a certain amount on their own. While the whole team can help come up with the answer, the captain must give the team's answer (unless he designates another team member to answer, in which case he must let the moderator know he is doing so). After a bonus question is completed (correctly or incorrectly), a Toss-Up is given.

[edit] Penalties

Interrupt - If, during a toss-up, a player buzzes in, they will have the opportunity to answer the question. If they get it correct, their team gets the bonus as usual. However, if they answer incorrectly, their team loses 5 points, and the remainder of the question is read to the other team. Still, no conferring can occur, but the other team has exclusive rights to buzz in and answer the question.

Conferring - If, during a toss-up, any communication occurs among the team members (whether it be a hand gesture or a verbal word), the team will be disqualified from answering the question, and the question will be read to the other team.
