Robert James Gorlin

Robert James Gorlin, (11 January 1923 -- 29 August 2006), was a world-renowed oral and maxillofacial pathologist.[1] In addition, Gorlin produced scientific advances in the study of hereditary hearing loss[2] and genetic defects and syndromes.[3]

Gorlin was born in Hudson, New York on January 11, 1923.

After graduating from Columbia College (AB) in 1943, Gorlin joined the US Army. Returning from active duty, Gorlin enrolled at the Washinton University School of Dentistry, receiving his DDS in 1947. Research fellowships at the NIH and Columbia University...... Gorlin also completed a master's degree (in oral pathology) from the State University of Iowa in 1956.[4]

Gorlin joined the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry as an assistant professor in 1956, where he would eventually become the chairman of the Department of Oral Pathology and Genetics. His wide-ranging research expertise led to additional appointments in the departments of dermatology, obstetrics and gynecology, otolaryngology and pediatrics.[5][3]

Gorlin was a prolific author. In addition to his role as the lead author of the encyclopedic text Syndromes of the Head and Neck[6], he published over 600 articles over his career.[4]

He was a Senior Fellow in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.[7]
