Talk:Marquetry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I wouldn't say that Marquetry is solely the domain of specialists. Perhaps as veneered furniture yes. However it is a fascinating craft for the amateur, requiring little equipment to get started with: specifically, a sharp craft knife, wood glue and preferably a cutting board with a pattern, plus the veneers required and a backing board of some kind. A company called Art Veneers supplies full single-design kits that are very useful for the beginner, they're now at: http://www.craft-supplies.co.uk/artvenners/index.html There is also a good site with some beautiful pictures showing the capabilities of the craft (assuming a beginner isn't going to be put off!), belonging to the Marquetry Society of Great Britain, at: http://www.marquetry.org/
- Anything can be attempted by amateurs. In the workshops of pre-World War II furniture-makers, the marquetry-cutters were specialists.
