Located 38 miles north of downtown San Diego, Camp Pendleton
covers over 125,000 acres and approximately 200 square miles of
terrain. The stretch of shoreline along the base-- 17½ miles --
is the largest undeveloped portion of coastal area left in Southern
California.

Wikipedia already has the size of 29 Palms: Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms

[T]he entire installation is far larger in area (approx. 932 sq mi.).

As such, its a rather rediculous claim that Pendleton is the largest Marine base.

Seems like it when you're humping across it with those god damn packs, though. --Johnny (Cuervo) 03:15, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Breakdown by Camps/Areas?

Is anyone interested in creating a section where we break down the individual Camps/areas on the base and give a quick description followed by units that are based there?? WIlling to try anything to make this page look better. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Looper5920 (talk • contribs) .

With just the large History section, this article could stand for some expansion. A discussion of the current activities and facilities on the base would be a nice improvement. A discussion of the wildlife on the base and the role the base has played in protecting a substantial amount coastal land between two large populations centers is also something that should be added. I know, for example, that the endangered Least Tern nests on the base. BlankVerse 14:45, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

I really can't speak to the wildlife on base but I can get started on a few of the different camps and areas and hopefully others can add and improve. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Looper5920 (talk • contribs) .

It would be helpful to see some info on what sort of training happens at the base, what organizations are associated with the base, etc. BlankVerse 13:11, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

-Added WFTBN (Weapons & Field Training Battalion) and 31 Area (MCRD Edson Range)

[edit] POV issue?

It may be my reading of it, but I feel that there is a significant bias in the POV of the article. There are some areas (the one that caught my eye the most was the Vietnam War portion in the History section). I don't know how best to edit it to instill a NPOV without upsetting anyone. Good catch. The reason there was POV is that it was not written by Wikipedia editors, it was a copyvio dump from http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/camp-pendleton.htm. I've removed the copied text, perhaps editors can fill in the more recent history. Cheers, -Will Beback 21:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Navy detachment

What about the Naval Weapons Station (detachment) on the Fallbrook side of base? --Cuervo, not logged in, 76.201.16.51 15:02, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Damage by fires?

Does anyone know if Camp Pendleton was affected by the Californian wildfires? Vladiator 21:44, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, but I don't feel comfortable elaborating at my rank. ;-) It should be relatively well-known that base was used to evacuate civilians from Fallbrook, though. --Johnny (Cuervo) 06:53, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
