Talk:Mare Tranquillitatis

Since they are essentially appendages to this maria, I added in the four attached bays on this page rather than making them separate pages. — RJH 15:01, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Should it be referred to as "Sea of Tranquility" or "Sea of Tranquillity"? The former is used in the article, while on the Main Page—whence I came to this article—I encountered the latter. Merriam-Webster Online lists "tranquillity" as its main entry and "tranquility" as a variant. Google Fight shows a pretty even match between the two. --timc | Talk 16:27, 20 July 2005 (UTC)
- The single 'l' is an Americanism (according to Chambers). All the other '-ility' nouns (that I can think of) come from adjectives ending in '-le' (usually '-ble' or '-ile'). Most Americans shorten the pronunciation of '-ile' words (so, for instance, the film title Hostel would be seen as a pun). Hence, 'tranquil' is lumped in with 'hostile' etc., and thus 'tranquillity' is lumped in with 'hostility' etc. – and the double 'l' is overlooked. Grant 11:24, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
