The distance from Marathon to Athens is not 26.2 miles. The reason why a marathon race is 26.2 miles has nothing to with the distance from Marathon to Athens, which very well may be 26 miles(or not even 26 miles). the .2 came about when the Royal Family, in one of the early olympics wanted a better view of the race at the finish, so they extended it an additional .2 of a mile. The rest, well, as we say, is precedent and history.
