[edit] Winners of the international tournament

I took the early winners from Golombek. Notable is the fact that the Mar del Plata website has only 1 winner per tournament, whereas Golombek has 2 winners for several editions. Does somebody has an independent source? Problematic is the 1956 edition; where the website has totally different winners. I checked the result with Chessbase's megatabase and Golombek appears to be right. It would be nice to have an extra reference though. Voorlandt (talk) 09:56, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

  • I struck out on finding alternate winners lists or crosstables for most of the years. (Sunnucks has scores for some years deemed to be "strong", but this includes for instance 1957 but not 1956.) I did find corroboration for the 1956 result in Hooper&Whyld. The Bolbochan entry says he was in a first place tie with Najdorf ahead of Eliskases in 1956. Quale (talk) 02:59, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Plural or singular?

Should this page be at the singular title Mar del Plata chess tournament instead? I'm not absolutely sure. This question comes up a lot with articles on series of chess tournaments (Hastings International Chess Congress, Linares chess tournament, Piatigorsky Cup, Reggio Emilia chess tournament, etc. One complication here is that there are several Mar del Plata chess tournaments: the international, the open, and the city championship, and this article mentions them all. The relevant wikipedia guidelines seem to be WP:NAME and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (plurals). Quale (talk) 15:25, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

I took the plural because as you say, there are 3 are types of tournaments. I don't feel strong either way, feel free to rename the page if you think it should be. Or do you think the article should be split into two articles? Voorlandt (talk) 15:46, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
It doesn't seem worth a split to me, and your reasoning about the several different tournaments covered (not just several editions of the same tournament) makes sense. One of the points mentioned in the guidelines is that plural titles can be harder to link (they require a piped link if you want the singular, whereas it's often easy to turn a singular page into a plural link), but I'm not sure that makes any difference here.
