Mitsuyo Maeda (Maeda Mitsuyo, November 18, 1878–November 28, 1941), was a Japanese, judōka and prizefighter in no holds barred competitions. He was also known as Count Combat (or Conde Koma in Brazil), a nickname he picked up in Spain during 1908. Along with Antônio Soishiro Satake (another naturalized Brazilian), he pioneered judo in Brazil, United Kingdom, and other countries, and was responsible for teaching the Gracie brothers, thereby making him fundamental to the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
