[edit] Route Description
Maryland Route 135 is a two-lane road through its entire length. The road begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 219 in Oakland. From there it travels through Mountain Lake Park, Loch Lynn Heights, and Deer Park. It then descends Backbone Mountain before a sharp curve near Bloomington. Route 135 passes through Luke as Pratt Street and through Westernport as Church Street, before paralleling the Potomac River to McCoole, where it ends at U.S. Route 220.
Route 135 is notorious for its descent of Backbone Mountain, where many truck drivers have lost their brakes and crashed at the bottom of the mountain.[1] The sharp turn in the road at the bottom of the mountain is marked with crosses painted on the rock for each of the truckers who have died there.[2] Because of this grade, MDSHA has installed signage along Interstate 68, U.S. Route 40 and U.S. Route 219 directing truck traffic from the west to use Maryland Route 36 to access Luke and Westernport rather than MD 135.
