Mary Switzer Building

In 1973, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare building in Washington, D.C. was dedicated the Mary Elizabeth Switzer Building. For Switzer's years of service to public welfare, and specifically to the championing of people with disabilities, the landmark was given her name. Currently the Mary Switzer Building is occupied by the Social Security Administration, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and the United States Information Service. A $68 million modernization of this 50-year-old federal building is scheduled to for completion in 2008. The preservation and modernization of this historic building was lead by GSA Design Excellence Leader, James T. Kienle, FAIA with HNTB Architects, Engineers, & Planners.
