(1976)

Mary, Scherrie & Susaye is the final 'official' studio album by The Supremes, released in 1976 (see 1976 in music) on the Motown label. A later lineup made an album of re-recordings in the 1990's, but this album remains the last collection of all-new material.

The album featured the final line-up for the Supremes, comprised of original Supreme Mary Wilson and latter-day members Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene. All three Supremes take leads on the album. Regarded as something of an overlooked disco gem, the album was a mixture of hard-driving, high energy dance tracks and ethereal R&B ballads. Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene mostly took over the dance tracks while Mary Wilson performed the ballads. Released to the public in October of 1976, the album was released nine months before the trio broke up.

[edit] Singles history

While three singles were released from the album, their success was severely limited due to Motown's lack of support. The first two singles to be released were done so in the U.S. while they were both successful in finding their way into the top five on the dance chart, they were not able to find much of a pop or R&B audience. The last single to be released, was done so strictly in the United Kingdom where it met the same fate as its predecessors.

  • "You Are My Driving Wheel" b/w "You're What's Missing in My Life" (b-side taken from High Energy) (Motown 1407, September 30, 1976)
