Marta Laureano
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marta Laureano is most notable for her involvement in a controversially ruled child custody battle. She is of Mexican descent, and was born on the 16th of August 1995 in Amarillo, Texas. After the court case over "child abuse", the circuit judge, Samuel Kiser, ruled that Laureano was required by law to speak English with her daughter.
Marta Laureano wanted to speak her native language, Spanish with her child, so that she would grow up bilingual. The divorced English-speaking father took legal action against Laureano and won the case. The father felt that if the mother spoke with the child in only Spanish, that he wouldn't be able to communicate with her. As the reasoning for the judgment, it was stated that the child had to be protected from a life as a house maid, as was her mother's occupation.
