[edit] History

Lead singer Jacob Bunton first formed the group under the name Wish in Birmingham in 1995.[1] They signed with Atlantic Records in 1997 and recorded demos, but Atlantic dropped them before releasing any of their material.[2] When producer John Kalodner sought to revive Portrait Records under the umbrella of Columbia at the end of the 1990s, Mars Electric was the first group he signed to the label.[3] Kalodner also produced their debut album, Beautiful Something, which was released in February of 2000.[4][5][6] Michael Swann plays lead guitar on four tracks of the album.[7] The group toured with Stone Temple Pilots and Motley Crue following the album's release.[2]

Mars Electric was dropped from Portrait at the end of 2000, and the group nearly broke up as a result.[2] Bunton put together a group called Lynam, which would go on to have its own major-label contract a few years later.[8] However, in 2003, Magnus Soderkvist of Swedish label Atenzia Records learned the group had recorded a second album which was never released, and offered to put it out on his label.[2] The result was Fame Among the Vulgar, released in May of 2003.[9][10] By this time, Lynam had become Bunton's primary concern, and Mars Electric disbanded soon after the release of Fame Among the Vulgar.
