Mark W. Hemphill

Mark W. Hemphill was the editor of Trains magazine from September 2000 until July 2004 and remains an occasional contributor to the magazine. He is noted for his vast portfolio of railroad photographs, and is the author of Union Pacific: Salt Lake Route.

Hemphill was the first Trains editor to have been a professional railroader, having served as a dispatcher for the Kansas City Southern Railway in Shreveport, Louisiana, and managed a locomotive repair firm.

From 2005 until 2007, Hemphill was the Senior Consultant--Rail for the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office, an arm of the US Department of State. In this capacity he assisted the Director General of the Iraqi Republic Railways in the reconstruction of Iraq’s national railroad system, damaged by war and neglect during the regime of Saddam Hussein.

He continues to work in the railroad industry, and is now based in Portland, Oregon.
